Five Essential Tips for Cloakroom Design
September 2, 2025
Cloakrooms are by far the most fun place in many homes. They are often small and relatively inexpensive to decorate. Since we don’t spend much time in them, we’re not concerned about getting bored with the style. This area offers an opportunity for many to express themselves and have fun with the decor.
Here are my five essential tips for successful cloakroom design.
1. COLOUR
There is usually no point in trying to make this room look larger. We might as well transform it into a cosy jewellery box! My main advice is to evaluate the colour in the actual light: daytime, if there is a window, and also under electric light. Remember that the colour temperature of your light fixtures will influence how the colour appears in your space.
2. WALLCOVERINGS
The same approach applies if you are using wallpaper. Check the colour in situ and ensure it is practical and can withstand some scratches and splashes. That’s it. No more rules. Have fun! The world is your oyster. There are so many exciting options on the market! Cole & Son, Zoffany and Arte come to mind first. Whatever tickles your pickle – it’s all available: flamingoes, fish, monkeys, geography, panoramas, flowers, or geometric patterns. I won’t be strict with you about the scale, as long as you enjoy it.
3. YOUR BASIN
If there is an option, it is best to make sure the basin becomes the focal point of the bathroom and not the loo. You can choose an unusual one. My main advice is to use the largest basin you can fit in. Don’t install a “finger basin” just to be “on the safe side”. These tiny vessels are so annoying and unattractive. Take your measurements, mark the floor, cut a template from an Amazon box – do what you can to check the size – and use the biggest sink you can fit in.
4. STORAGE
Storage is often a wishful thought in a small guest bathroom. Avoid open shelves – they will make the space look messy. Try to find a basin with a vanity. Adding a mirror that features a cabinet behind it can also be a great solution. Or ask your builder to do his magic and accommodate a hidden storage space between wall joists.
5. LIGHTING
Lighting is your best ally. Add a dimmer switch; low light can create a cosy atmosphere in your small space.
I firmly believe decorating your home should be an enjoyable process. Cloakroom bathroom is a great place to start!
